Hatch Park Redesign

11.3.25 Update: The City has been working on the Hatch Park design for over three years and the project is now underway.  In order to redevelop and expand the park, the plans take into account 28 feet of elevation change from east to west. Due to this elevation change, many existing trees will not survive the redevelopment of the park. The City and its consultants have certified arborists who have overseen this design work. The Mayor and City Council also discussed the preservation of as many trees as possible.

The City marked many trees prior to demolition activities, but those trees were marked so that a local artist could retrieve some of the wood from those trees in order to create artwork that will then be returned and put into the new park. Those markings were not indications that those trees would be preserved.

We apologize for the closure of Hatch Park earlier this year. It was thought that we would make faster progress and closed the park so that we could begin construction much sooner. The City has also been working with the Utah Department of Transportation on their plans to widen I-15 in the next four years. Some of the delay has been due to getting the I-15 plans finalized, but the City also experienced some delays in the design work leading up to the construction phase which has now begun. Construction on the park is now expected to continue without interruption until it is completed.

The expansion and renovation of Hatch Park has been planned for the last three years using citizen volunteers in visioning and planning of the new park as well as public input on the park design. Prior to that in 2013, the project was adopted as a goal in the City’s General Plan. Due to all of that input and planning, the park will have new facilities and amenities that will greatly enhance the park's recreational opportunities as well as provide extraordinary gathering space for the entire City. There will be an 8-court pickle ball facility, an expanded pavilion and picnic area, a greatly enlarged playground area, large plaza areas for City events and gatherings and an extraordinary water feature that will provide open space for the public to congregate and enjoy the park. The park will be an exceptional meeting place and will become a central location for food trucks, live music, city celebrations and many other events. The renovated park will also have lighting that will allow for appropriate evening use of the park. We know that the existing Hatch Park is dear to many of our residents. We also affirm that new facilities have been planned with public input and that the new park will be a wonderful public place that citizens will enjoy for many decades.

10.22.25 Update: You may soon start seeing some activity at Hatch Park! As part of the park’s long-awaited redevelopment, crews are scheduled to begin the first phase of demolition and mass grading. This initial phase should take about 3–4 months to complete.

The second phase—construction of the park’s new features and improvements—is expected to begin in spring 2026 and continue for 12–18 months.

While several of the older trees will be removed during this process, we’re pleased to share that the wood from these trees will be repurposed by a local artist who plans to create sculptural pieces and benches that will honor the park’s history and natural beauty.

We truly appreciate the community’s patience as we move forward with this important project.

9.10.25 Update: The City had expected construction to be underway much sooner, and we apologize for the extended closure and delay. Work is now scheduled to begin in October with demolition and mass grading. The first phase should take about 3-4 months. The second phase, construction of the park's new features and improvements, will begin in spring 2026 and expected to last 12-18 months.

8.5.25 Update: There have been additional delays due to UDOT’s major I-15 redesign project, which impacts the Center Street exit. As a result, the grading plan for the new Hatch Park had to be modified, leading to further delays. We hope to provide more information soon.

The City is excited to about the Hatch Park redesign project. The graphic below shows the most recent updates to the project master plan (done by Site Landscape Architects, G. Brown Design). Please note: the element details shown in the plan are still only concepts. Nothing displayed in the current plan should be considered final.

You will notice that the design is shown in project phases, with construction on Phase 1 beginning in early 2025. Phase 1 covers the largest area of the park and includes gathering spaces, water and pond features, walking paths, picnic and pavilion areas, a plaza for events like vendors, art shows, musical events and farmers markets, eight lighted pickleball courts with seating, a large grass playing field, playground structures, and other amenities. We anticipate one year to 18 months of construction to complete Phase 1.

Phase 2 includes the north section of park where several old structures were removed in late 2024 in anticipation of the park expansion. Phase 2 will have additional parking, a softball diamond and dugouts, a full size lighted basketball court, a pavilion and more restrooms.

Phase 3, the northeast section along Main Street, is designated as the Urban Core Phase and may include structures to accommodate civic/event/commercial space, a stage, gathering areas, art features, sculpted grass berms, seating spaces, and more.

We envision the new Hatch Park to be a wonderful community gathering space that will help unite neighborhoods throughout the City.

A public open house was held January 29, 2025 where many residents were able to view more details give input and discuss plans with city staff, elected officials and park designers.
